Leadership Coaching Certification
Good coaching changes the conversation. Great coaching can change what happens next.
That starts with knowing how to listen for what's really being said, asking the question that opens something up and creating enough space for a different perspective to emerge. These are practical skills. They can shift a leadership conversation, unlock a new way forward and change how people experience their work.
Leadership coaching certification gives those skills a professional pathway.
At Erickson, that pathway is grounded in the Solution-Focused approach, experiential learning and the standards of the International Coaching Federation. You'll develop your coaching practice through conversation, observation, feedback and real-world application, while building toward an ICF credential recognized across industries and around the world.
There are different levels, different routes and different reasons to pursue them. You might be developing your leadership practice, adding coaching to an existing role, building an internal coaching capability or creating a professional coaching practice of your own.
Wherever you're headed, the journey starts with a conversation.
Why ICF-Accreditation Matters
Coaching has become part of how people lead, develop talent and create change in organizations around the world. As the profession has grown, so has the value of a clear professional standard.
That's where the International Coaching Federation comes in.
ICF sets standards for coach education and professional credentials, giving coaches a structured pathway from training into professional practice. ICF-accredited education includes defined training requirements, mentor coaching and assessment aligned with the ICF Core Competencies.
For someone choosing a coaching program, accreditation gives you something useful: a clearer sense of what you're learning, how much training sits behind it and where that learning can take you.
Current ICF Level 1 programs include 60 to 124 hours of coach-specific education. Level 2 programs include 125 to 175 hours. From there, your coaching experience, mentoring and assessment contribute to the credential you're working toward.
It's worth paying attention to those details when you're exploring your options. A provider may offer its own certificate or designation, but that isn't the same as an ICF-accredited education pathway. Look for the accrediting body, the education hours, the mentoring, the assessment and the credential pathway.
The standard matters because your coaching practice will travel beyond the classroom.
The ICF-Credential Journey
ICF credentials mark different stages of professional coaching development, and each one asks you to bring more experience to the conversation.
The Associate Certified Coach (ACC) is the first credential level. It requires at least 60 hours of coach-specific education and 100 hours of coaching experience, alongside the applicable mentoring and assessment requirements. For leaders, HR professionals and emerging coaches, it can provide a strong foundation for bringing coaching into everyday professional life.
Then there's Professional Certified Coach (PCC). The experience deepens considerably here. Candidates need at least 125 hours of coach-specific education, 500 hours of coaching experience and at least 25 clients, along with the applicable mentoring and assessment requirements.
For leadership practitioners, this is where coaching can become a substantial professional capability. Erickson's Level 2 pathway provides 125 hours of coach training, 10 hours of mentoring and a PCC-level oral assessment.

Beyond PCC is Master Certified Coach (MCC), an advanced credential for experienced coaches. The requirements rise to at least 200 hours of coach-specific education and 2,500 hours of coaching experience, as well as a current or previous PCC credential.
MCC isn't simply the next course on a list. It's the result of a much longer coaching journey, shaped by thousands of hours of practice and continued professional development.
And that's part of what makes the credential journey interesting. You're not just collecting levels. You're developing a practice.
Coaching Certification and University Study
Leadership development can take many forms.
A university leadership certificate might deepen your understanding of strategy, organizational behavior, management or leadership theory. An ICF-accredited coaching pathway puts the practice of coaching at the center.
One doesn't have to replace the other.
For a leader, HR professional or L&D specialist, coaching can become another dimension of an existing role. You can use it in development conversations, support people through change, help emerging leaders think more expansively or bring a different quality of attention to one-to-one conversations.
For someone building a coaching practice, the pathway is different again. The focus moves toward professional coaching competence, client experience and the ongoing development of your craft.
Erickson's online leadership training programs also give professionals flexible ways to develop their leadership capability, depending on where they are in their journey.
The interesting question isn't which type of education is universally better. It's what you want the learning to make possible.
What Makes Erickson's Approach Different?
The coaching methodology matters.
Erickson's approach is rooted in Solution-Focused coaching, a practical and future-oriented way of working that looks for possibility, progress and the resources people already have available to them.
That philosophy runs through the learning experience. You don't simply study coaching conversations. You experience them.
You practice. You observe. You receive feedback. You experiment with questions and approaches. You learn to notice what's happening in a conversation and respond to it in the moment.
There's also an NLP-informed dimension to the training, adding another lens for understanding how people communicate, interpret experience and create meaning.
Together, these approaches give the training its character. The aim isn't to hand you a script for coaching. It's to help you develop the awareness and flexibility to meet each conversation as it unfolds.
That's particularly valuable in leadership, where no two conversations arrive neatly packaged.
A performance conversation isn't the same as a career conversation. A difficult team dynamic isn't the same as a moment when someone is ready to step into a bigger role. Coaching gives leaders another way to meet those moments.

Certification is Only the Beginning
Your coaching credentials are part of your professional foundation, and at Erickson, that journey starts with the training you complete. From Level 1, you can earn the Erickson Accredited Coach credential. At Level 2, you can earn the Erickson Certified Professional Coach designation, along with the official badge. These Erickson credentials carry international recognition and allow you to begin practising coaching while progressing towards ICF certification.
The ICF pathway offers a further layer of professional recognition. ICF credentials are renewed every three years, with 40 Continuing Coach Education credits required during each renewal period, including specific requirements around Core Competencies and ethics.
Professional development continues long after your initial training. There’s always more to notice, more to practise and more to discover about how people think, grow and create change. Both your Erickson credentials and your ongoing development contribute to the practitioner you become.
ICF has also announced changes to the assessment process for ACC and PCC Portfolio applicants from 1 April 2027. If you're planning to apply around that date, check the latest requirements directly with ICF.
The qualification matters. So does what you do with it.
What Does Organizational Impact Actually Look Like?
The strongest evidence won't come from a completion certificate. It will come from what changes afterward.
That might mean movement in engagement, stronger internal mobility, improved retention, more internal promotions or better leadership conversations.
The important thing is to establish the measures before the program begins and then look honestly at what changed.
