How Erickson Alumni, Milinda Alexander, future-proofed her career, and is helping others do the same
In today’s fast-moving professional world, few career journeys are straight lines. With automation, AI, and evolving workplace cultures, the future belongs to those who can adapt, listen deeply, and lead with purpose. For many, coaching isn’t just a new skillset - it’s a compass in times of transition.
For Milinda Alexander, an occupational therapist and Erickson-trained coach with over 25 years of experience in solution-focused counselling, discovering coaching was less of a pivot and more of a profound realization: she had already been coaching - she just didn’t have the language for it.
“I was using it without knowing it,” she says with a laugh. “Instinctively and intuitively, I’d been working that way for years.”
Her story reflects a growing trend: experienced professionals turning to coaching to reframe, reinvigorate, and reimagine their impact in a changing world.
Coaching as an Evolution, Not a Departure
Milinda first encountered coaching formally in 2018 while doing her Master’s in Leadership. At the time, she was working in leadership, supporting teams and staff, and also teaching OT at a local university.
“Coaching just made sense for students,” she recalls. “They’re always so focused on assessments and passing. Coaching helped shift the mindset - not to think ten steps ahead, but just the next right step.”
She integrated coaching tools into her team meetings and classroom discussions, using powerful questions, goal alignment, and presence to guide others toward their own insights.
“I realized coaching wasn’t about fixing. It was about drawing out people’s strengths and helping them build their own direction. That was a helpful mindset shift for me and those I was supporting.”
When Career Shifts Find You
Not long after discovering coaching, Milinda experienced her own career transition.
“I had a change in my role,” she says. “And I needed to make some decisions about what was next.”
Like many mid-career professionals, Milinda was at a crossroads - not just in terms of work, but in identity. “You reach a point where you start asking, ‘What’s meaningful now? Where do I want to put my energy?’”
It was then that coaching moved from a helpful tool to a transformative framework. “Coach training helped me reflect on my values. It gave me structure during a time when everything felt unstructured.”
She chose Erickson Coaching International for many reasons, particularly for its ICF-accredited, award-winning solution-focused programs. “It was such a natural fit,” she says. “Erickson’s approach built on what I already knew - but it deepened it. It gave me a new way of being.”
The Future Needs Human-Centered Professionals
Milinda’s story resonates in a world where professional reinvention is increasingly the norm. According to the World Economic Forum, 47% of companies are preparing to move employees out of AI-impacted jobs into new roles. Transitioning isn’t just about retraining - it’s about reimagining.
In this context, coaching is a bit of a ‘career multiplier’, equipping leaders with the ability to ask powerful questions, lead through uncertainty, and communicate with clarity (all top skills companies seek in today’s modern workplace).
It’s equally beneficial for personal development and stress management.
“Coaching helped me build emotional regulation,” Milinda shares. “In high-stress times, that calm presence matters more than ever - in health care, in leadership, in life.”
Why Coaching Skills Are Essential in Times of Transition
Coaching builds:
-
Adaptability in uncertain environments
-
Emotional intelligence, which 85% of clients now request help with
-
Collaborative communication for inclusive leadership
-
Solution-focused thinking that replaces fear with forward motion
A Tool for Life, Not Just Work
Today, Milinda uses coaching across all of her roles - as a private practitioner, university educator and a mentor. But more importantly, she lives it.
“I don’t have to switch into coach mode,” she says. “It’s who I am now - with colleagues, students, and even family.”
This echoes what many Erickson graduates express: coaching isn’t a technique you use; it’s a way of being that invites growth, connection, and purpose. It’s a mindset that builds presence, empowerment, and partnership. Whether you’re an HR leader, mid-career professional, or entrepreneur, coaching equips you with practical frameworks and inner tools to thrive.
“Instead of carrying the weight for others,” Milinda reflects, “I walk beside them.”
This is particularly crucial when it comes to one’s mental wellbeing. According to the ICF Coaching Snapshot 2024, 85% of coaches say clients now seek support for emotional regulation, burnout, and clarity under pressure.
And while coaching certainly isn’t therapy, it does offer structured emotional support through deep listening, empathy, and future-focused goal setting. Skills that Milinda had honed over years. Tools like mindfulness practices, presence-based inquiry, and outcome framing help clients return to calm and take strategic action. The principle of 'okay-ness' and people having the resources within them to move forward are powerful tenants that Milinda relies upon.
“Being solution-focused doesn't mean ignoring stress,” Milinda explains. “It means knowing how to move forward, even in the fog.”
New Leadership for a New Generation
With over half the global population now under 30, organizational culture is shifting. Top-down leadership is giving way to inclusive, purpose-driven practices. Coaching is at the center of this evolution.
Erickson-trained leaders learn how to:
-
Listen deeply and lead with questions
-
Build inclusive, cross-generational teams
-
Inspire collaboration, rather than command compliance
As Milinda concludes, “Titles don’t build trust anymore - transparency does. Coaching taught me to foster psychological safety. And that completely changed how I lead.”
